Kung Wai studied Biodynamic Agriculture and Rural Development, as well as participated in community development work in Asia, Europe and USA between 1981 to 1993, before returning to Malaysia. He specialised in organic agriculture consultancy in 1999, after 5 years as Sustainable Agriculture Programme Officer for Pesticide Action Network, Asia and the Pacific (PAN AP). He worked as Grolink partner consultant since 2002.
His work for NGOs, private companies and government bodies include conference organising, development strategy, training, quality systems and marketing. Kung Wai is lead trainer of the Organic Agriculture Development course for Asia and Africa, sponsored by the Swedish government. He was Commissioning Editor of The Organic Standard (, a journal on organic standards, certification, accreditation and regulations for 7 years. He was a board member and Vice-President of the International Organic Accreditation Service (IOAS) between 1996 to 2005 and World Board member of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) from 2005 to 2011. Kung Wai aspires to mainstream organic agriculture.
Credibility of organic products is critical for market growth. Collaboration amongst private sector and with the public sector is critical to sustainable sector development. Kung Wai is a founding member of Organic Alliance Malaysia and currently serves as Chairperson as well as Executive Director. In 2008, he consolidated a partnership arrangement between certification bodies working in the region known as Certification Alliance (CertAll), enabling OAM to offer export certification in the country. He is developing collaboration between OAM and the Department of Agriculture, Malaysia to implement the Malaysian organic labeling regulation.
